Belize is set to launch a massive surveillance project, installing at least 1,000 cameras in the capital city to enhance public security and safety. The project, starting in March, aims to create a surveillance infrastructure equipped with facial recognition and motion video detection capabilities. This will enable real-time monitoring and evidence collection for crimes like kidnappings, robberies, and murder. The system will also feature panic buttons to alert security officers in case of emergencies.
The surveillance cameras will be able to track unusual movements, zoom in on areas of concern, and follow fleeing individuals until police arrive. The project is part of the Belize Integral Security Program, funded by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration with approximately $30 million. The initiative aims to make it easier for law enforcement to intervene promptly in public trouble incidents.
