Europe’s IoT Policy Update

The European Union is actively promoting the development and adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies across the continent. The EU has invested around €100 million in IoT projects and other activities under Horizon Europe’s Cluster 4. This funding supports research and innovation projects focused on decentralised intelligence and swarms. The goal is to keep most data processing at the edge and device level, rather than in the cloud.

The EU’s IoT strategy aims to accelerate the take-up of next-generation IoT and edge computing, revolutionizing production and processes across strategic value chains. The European Commission is working with industry, organizations, and academia to unleash the potential of IoT and achieve European leadership in the field. IoT technologies are expected to optimize daily life, with the number of installed IoT connected devices set to increase from 40 billion in 2023 to 49 billion by 2026.
