The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Correctional Services Department (CSD) have partnered to upcycle food waste into environmentally friendly products. PolyU’s patented technology converts food waste into materials suitable for industrial use. The collaboration promotes sustainability and rehabilitation efforts within correctional facilities. It integrates scientific research into industrial production, creating economic, ecological, and social benefits.
The partnership’s first phase involves using spent coffee grounds to develop 3D printing material, reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative provides vocational training to persons in custody, enhancing their employability in the green economy. This approach reinforces the community-oriented nature of the programme, extending benefits beyond correctional institutions.
