Italy, Albania, and the UAE have signed a landmark deal worth at least 1 billion euros to build a subsea interconnection, importing renewable energy across the Adriatic Sea. This project will strengthen existing power interconnections, making them more efficient and competitive. The partnership aims to enhance energy security, promote sustainable development, and accelerate the transition to clean energy in the Mediterranean region.
The three-way partnership involves Italian grid operator Terna and UAE’s National Energy Company (Taqa), connecting the Albanian port of Vlore to Italy’s southern region of Puglia. The infrastructure is expected to be operational within three years, allowing Albania to sell locally produced renewable energy. This project will increase Albania’s renewable energy capacity, which has already grown by 500 MW in the past two years. The collaboration combines the UAE’s expertise in renewable energy, Albania’s natural resources, and Italy’s sophisticated energy market.
