Laundry Cleaning Tips
sprinkle salt, sparkle clean
1. Combat Wine Spills
When wine spills on a cotton or linen tablecloth, blot immediately and cover the area with salt. The salt absorbs the wine, minimizing stains. After dinner, soak the fabric in cold water for 30 minutes before laundering.
2. Control Oversudsing
Too many suds in the laundry? A quick sprinkle of salt eliminates excess foam, ensuring a smooth wash cycle.
3. Revive Faded Colors
Brighten dull rugs, carpets, or curtains by washing them in a saltwater solution. For faded areas, rub briskly with a cloth dipped in strong saltwater and wrung out.
4. Remove Perspiration Stains
Sponge away sweat stains by using a solution of four tablespoons of salt dissolved in one quart of hot water.
5. Eliminate Blood Stains
Soak the stained fabric in cold saltwater before laundering with warm soapy water. For natural fibers like cotton or linen, boiling after washing ensures complete stain removal.
6. Clean Sticky Iron Bottoms
To remove gunk or sticky residue from an iron, sprinkle salt on paper and run the hot iron over it for a clean, smooth surface.
7. Set Fabric Colors
Preserve fabric dye by soaking garments in a mixture of ½ cup salt, ½ cup vinegar, and ½ gallon of water for an hour. Rinse and repeat if necessary. For multicolored fabrics, dry cleaning is recommended to prevent colors from bleeding.
