Singapore Introduces Online Safety Practice

Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has introduced a new Code of Practice for Online Safety, targeting App Distribution Services (ADSs) to safeguard users from harmful content. The Code ensures designated ADSs implement proactive measures to enhance online safety, focusing on protecting children from exposure to inappropriate content. This move expands online safety regulations to include ADSs, recognizing their growing importance as gateways to accessing apps on mobile devices.

The new regulations require designated ADSs to implement system-level measures, ensuring content meets safety standards and doesn’t expose users to damaging material. A key component is the implementation of age assurance measures, preventing children from accessing or downloading age-inappropriate apps. This proactive approach makes Singapore a pioneer in mandating age assurance measures, setting a model for other nations.
