Smart Home Cybersecurity Initiative

The White House has introduced the Cyber Trust Mark, a labeling system designed to help consumers evaluate the cybersecurity of smart devices. This initiative aims to address rising concerns about security risks posed by internet-connected devices. The Cyber Trust Mark will be awarded to products that meet cybersecurity criteria established by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Products with the label will be verified through compliance testing by accredited laboratories.

The program is voluntary, but consumer demand is expected to drive adoption. The government plans to focus initially on consumer devices like cameras before expanding the program to include routers and smart meters. The White House is also preparing an executive order requiring the federal government to purchase only Cyber Trust Mark-certified products starting in 2027.
